then in the main Photos window make sure that the check box "Open Photos for this device" is unchecked. First uncheck all the options for importing/downloading in Photo Preferences. If you do not want to use Apple Photo to import image files to your Mac you need to make some changes to Photo preferences. What do you mean by, "I cannot find extra drives to mount in the Disk Utility tool either"? What editing/Post processing software are you using? I cannot find extra drives to mount in the Disk Utility tool either. When I connect the camera to my Macbook with the USB cable, I can only import images in the Apple Photo but the Photo app cannot edit RAWs. But it's an inconvenience to me, I need to open the battery slot, eject the SD card and put them in the reader even for a few shots. I understand there are other ways to view photos, like using SD card reader, move photos from camera to portable HD in PC and plug HD in Macbook.
